How accounting and finance recruiters find clients

In short

Accounting and finance recruiting has a calendar that most other niches do not. A CPA firm partner is unreachable from February to mid-April, a controller is buried during month-end close, and a CFO opens budget for headcount in the first weeks of the fiscal year. Business development in this niche means picking the buyer first (a CFO or controller at a mid-size company, a partner at a CPA firm, an owner who also acts as finance lead) and writing when that person has room to answer.

Two buyers who do not behave alike

A mid-size company with an open staff accountant role usually decides in a few days: the controller or CFO owns the headcount and HR runs the paperwork. A CPA firm decides on the partners' timetable, which means the next two weeks, not the next quarter, and only when the work cannot be pushed to someone else. A Fortune 500 finance team sits behind a talent acquisition group and a vendor list. The same fee structure rarely works across all three, and one pitch cannot either. Decide which one you know best from your last three placements and write for that buyer.

The numbers are steady rather than spectacular. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 5 percent growth for accountants and auditors between 2025 and 2035, about 115,300 openings a year, and a median wage of $83,680 in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). Those openings count people who leave as well as new jobs, so a firm that lost a senior accountant in October is a more reliable prospect than one that "may grow".

Why CPA firms are worth a separate look

Public accounting firms hire constantly and lose people constantly, and a mid-size or regional firm with three partners has nobody whose job is recruiting. The partner who loses a senior associate in the fall faces the busy season without a replacement, and that is a search you can win. Be precise in your message: a senior who prepares returns for individuals is a different hire from one who reviews audit workpapers or handles state and local tax, and a partner will answer a recruiter who names the difference.

Corporate finance works differently. The roles with the most pressure are usually accounting manager, controller and FP&A, because they sit in the middle of month-end close and budgeting. A CFO who cannot find a controller keeps closing the books herself, and she will take a call that names the problem.

Which signals to chase and which to ignore

The posting itself remains the signal worth watching. In job ads Odyn wrote about between June and October 2026, a sample of nearly 5,000, mostly French postings, employers with a single ad online over two months produced about three times as many interested replies as other employers. In accounting, that points to the 80-person manufacturer hiring its second accountant before it points to a firm replacing twenty staff a year (prospecting companies that are hiring).

The fashionable "buying signals" predicted nothing clear in the same data: a funding round, a new executive, a public contract won. A change of executive recorded in the company register even pulled results down slightly, because it mostly concerns older, structured companies (recruitment agency business development). These are trends measured over a few months, which we re-measure every night, and they come from French ads, so check them against your own results before you rely on them in the US.

A calendar for prospecting

For employers with a calendar year-end, the heavy periods are year-end close in January and February and tax season through April 15, with a second wave when extended returns are due on October 15. Expect replies to slow in those weeks. Reach out to CPA partners between May and September, when they review what the busy season cost them, and again in early October, before the extension deadline. For corporate finance, January and the start of a new fiscal year are when approved headcount becomes real. The best moment is still the posting: write within a few days of its publication.

A first message to a firm partner

Hi Dana, I noticed your firm has been looking for a senior tax accountant (individual and partnership returns) since August. I place CPAs in the Columbus area, and most of the people I speak to are not applying to postings. If the seat is still open, I can introduce two candidates who have already worked through a busy season in a firm your size. Do you have ten minutes on Wednesday before the October deadline?

It names the work (individual and partnership returns), the geography and the pressure point, without a promise or a statistic. The wider craft is in the business development email, and finding the hiring decision-maker covers how to reach a partner or a CFO when the posting only shows an HR contact.

Objections in this niche

"We have a temp agency we already use." Temp placements fill a seat for the busy season; they do not fill the controller role you are describing, so ask whether the vacancy is temporary or permanent. "Our CPA friends will find someone." Ask whether any of them know a candidate for this seat today. "Your fee is too high for a $70,000 accountant." Compare it with what a late close or a delayed return costs the firm in client trust.

Where Odyn fits an accounting and finance desk

Odyn starts from the job posting, finds the person named on it, or the finance lead, or failing that the owner in a small company, and writes around the title in the ad. Keep targets narrow: "staff accountant, AP specialist" in one region, separate from "controller and FP&A" at mid-size companies. Postings from other recruiting firms and staffing agencies are dropped by default. For the first 3 business days you review every message; after that Odyn sends on its own after the delay you chose, and stops when a decision-maker replies. Its data comes mostly from French postings, so check coverage in your region first. The details are on the AI prospecting agent page and the pricing page (€290 per month per consultant excluding VAT). If you also place engineers, the IT recruiting page covers buyers who behave very differently, and the main guide shows where the niche fits in your pipeline.

Frequently asked questions

Should I specialize by role or by company size?

By company size first. A firm that places CFOs at listed groups and staff accountants at small manufacturers sends two different messages to two different buyers, and the first one has no idea what the second is worth.

Can a CPA firm be both a client and a referral source?

Yes, and keep them apart. As a client it has a seat to fill, and you answer that need. As a referral source it has nothing to fill, and your message is about what you do for its own clients' finance teams. Do not mix the two in one email.

Is the busy season an obstacle or an opening?

Both. It closes the door between February and mid-April, but it exposes gaps, and a partner who just survived a short-staffed season takes your call in the fall.
